Visit from Dutch Head Teacher

I received this e-mail from Mr.Bas Moll a headteacher in Amsterdam.

Hello dear colleague,

I am a Dutch head teacher of a primary Montessori school in Amsterdam. November 27 and 28 am I visiting friends in Glasgow. The weekend is for getting in touch with old friends the Thursday afternoon and Friday I would like to get in contact with colleagues head teachers of primary schools.  The main purpose of my visit is to talk with head teachers about their drive to become a head teacher, the kind of work they do, the skills they need and I like to hear their opinion about the standards they have to meet. I have been trained 6 years ago in a head teacher-training course but the things I do during a day are about  50% other tasks than the ones I was trained for. This has to do with lack of staff. How is the position of a head teacher in Scotland?   The second purpose is to have a view of the school, the classrooms, the accommodation of the school etc. If there is enough time I would like to ask what’s the influence of the school inspectors.

The need to visit you is that I would like to write an article in a monthly magazine of teachers in Holland. What can I offer you? I will always welcome you back in an old Montessori school in Amsterdam where I work, I can give you some information about the situation in Holland. If you would like to have a view of the school you can visit www.annefrank-montessori.nl It’s still not in English  but we are working on it.

Please write back if you can spare an hour on Thursday of Friday.

Kind regards

Bas Moll

Head teacher of the 6e Montessorischool Anne Frank

This visit went really well and we had a superb day. Mr. Bas Moll arrived about 9.30 and we had coffee and chatted about the different systems of education until interval time. Mr. Moll is HT of the Anne Frank, Montessori school in Amsterdam. I was left feeling that Glasgow city council are wonderful employers.

He met the staff at interval time, then we toured the school and met the children. Mr. Moll was very impressed with the cleanliness and spaciousness of our school and the interest shown by our pupils.

We managed to fit in a quick visit to Barrowfield PS before lunch to show him an entirely different type of school( open plan ). Then it was home to DPS for lunch -----fish n' chips and all the trimmings. Mr. Moll spoke to many children in our Cafeteria and they were all eager to talk and question him about Holland.

In the afternoon we had an educational session with P7, who study Anne Frank and the War .The children had been very excited to meet this Dutch HT and they were not disappointed. Mr Moll was excellent with the class and was very impressed with their knowledge and intelligent questions.

We then had the very quick photo shoot before Mr. Moll's taxi arrived.

Gifts were exchanged to leave reminders of the 2 schools and p7 were given a video on the Life of Anne Frank. They watched it straight away and although it moved them greatly, it was also very enjoyable and useful to the children. Contact with the Anne Frank school has now been established and both children and staff will endeavour to widen this contact in the coming months, through letters and maybe even emails.
