New School

Our much loved old red sandstone building was built in 1893,
to serve children of the workers in Glasgow's east-end and this the school has done most admirably as can be seen from the testimonies of former pupils and teachers within this website. Dalmarnock Primary School has a history to be proud of and the new school will embrace the children of Glasgow's east-end with open arms ready to serve and teach them.

The new school ...... artist's impression 2005
This is an artist's impression of the new Dalmarnock School, building due to start January 2006.
The new school will be situated on the existing playing fields. The main entrance is shown opposite the Ruby Street flats. The new football area is sited on our current car park and the rear of the school will be adjacent to Walkinshaw Street. The building consists of a main area including the nursery, administration and social areas with 3 teaching blocks leading off. The new school opened in Feb.2007.
Official opening ceremony was 15th Nov 2007...
unfortunately I wasn't invited.

October 2003 meeting
Headteachers were called to Education H.Q. where the Director of Education announced that £55 million pounds (over 3 years) was being released to revitalise educational provision in Glasgow.
For our school this means a brand new school, built and equipped to meet the needs of 21st century education for Dalmarnock Primary in 2005.
Therefore as well as our planned celebrations for the centenary of our present building, we shall also be celebrating the opening of a new well resourced building for all of the children of Glasgow's east-end.  The Director and Senior Education Officers will be arranging meetings in all schools affected by the proposals to fully explain them to staff, parents and pupils.

The Development of Pre-12 Education in Glasgow
Strategic Proposals - Stage 1

Three local schools which have a capacity for more than 900 pupils currently have a combined roll of just 207. They are Barrowfield Primary School (74), London Road Primary School (63) and Springfield Primary School (70).  Our own school Dalmarnock has a capacity for 488 pupils but currently has a roll of just 165.

The proposal is to build a new purpose built Dalmarnock Primary School with pre-5 facilities to replace all four schools. With effect from the end of school session June 2004 a split site campus will prevail until the new building is ready.

Timetable
Pupils currently in Dalmarnock Primary and Springfield Primary will be initially located in the Dalmarnock building from August 2004.  Those pupils currently in Barrowfield Primary, London Road Primary, Springfield Nursery and London Road Nursery will be initially located in the Barrowfield building.
Pupils then to be transferred to new purpose built accommodation for Dalmarnock Primary with facilities for pre-5 in August 2005 or as soon thereafter.

Site
Updated news Feb.2004 The school will be rebuilt on the site of our playing fields
Option 1 :  the present Dalmarnock Primary pitches and adjacent lands at Baltic Street
Option
2 :  the present Barrowfield Primary School and adjacent lands
These are alternative options either of which the Council may implement without further consultation.
                       .

Nurseries
London Road Nursery and Strathclyde Nursery will be closed and amalgamated with effect from the end of school session June 2004 and pupils transferred to the Barrowfield building until new Pre-5 accommodation is completed in the new Dalmarnock primary campus in August 2005 or as soon thereafter as possible.

Summary
25 primary schools + 11 nurseries + 2 special units to close and 10 new primaries to be built.
In Glasgow the number of primary age pupils has fallen from 110,000 who were taught in 212 schools 30 years ago ( 1973) to 43,000 who are being taught in 197 primary schools today .....and that is the problem.
