Gavin Murdoch Dux medalist 1902

.

Gavin Todd Murdoch
was born on October 10, 1889, at 3:20am at 7 Lockhart Street in Stonehouse.
We don't know where he lived while he attended Dalmarnock School .....interesting to note that Gavin did NOT attend secondary school.
As was common in those days he went to work to help support his family, working for Kinnear in Walls Street Glasgow until November 1906. He left Kinnear and was employed by James Templeton & Co. as a power loom setter. He worked there for 5 years until the end of October 1913 when he left to come to the USA. He worked throughout his time in Glasgow as a loom setter both power and hand. His letters of reference from his Scottish employers describe him as "intelligent, sober, steady and a first class tradesman."

Gavin died December 21, 1972 in Amsterdam, New York, USA.

Gavin's grandson in the USA tell us  "my grandfather's memories of his time spent at Dalmarnock School were fond. His success in life both in Scotland and America can surely be attributed to the 1st class education he received at your school. His high personal values and first rate character are shinning examples of all that is great about the folks in Scotland. I proudly boast of my grandfather and my Scottish heritage.

I thank you for the wonderful website you have created and I visit often to reflect upon Guy's legacy and that of his family. Should you have any further questions please contact me. It is our family goal to visit Scotland during the summer of 2007. When all has been arranged I will contact you to visit the school.

Extract from guestbook, Jan.2003.  Gavin Cocker William Murdoch, New York, USA.
"I just browsed the web page and was delighted that the information concerning Gavin "Guy" Murdoch, Dux 1902 was added. It is truly brilliant that such a page exists at your school's website. I have sent Dennis White a photo of a class from your school from around 1902, which you might also be interested in. I know that Guy would be proud. Thank you so much for including his info on your website.
I plan to bring my family to visit in 2007 and I'll be sure to drop by if you don't mind. You should know that I named my 1st son Gavin Todd Murdoch, Guys name after him. It is also ironic that my son graduated from high school here in 2002, exactly 100 years after Guy received his Dux Medal
from you school!
Thanks again, Warmest Regards,
Gavin W. Murdoch
