Education Department policy at the time.

New Dux Board .....each year there is a boy and girl winner.

1999 -

We have two benefactors for our Dux Board.
When John Street Sec.
school closed in 1998 , they presented us with a beautiful silver cup which was to be awarded to the Dux of the school. This is why we only have one winner in 1999.
In 1999 however, the
Rev Dr JJ Edmiston, from Canada contacted us. He is a former pupil and Dux ( 1928 ) of Dalmarnock Primary.
He wished to donate two Dux medals to the school - one for a girl and one for a boy .
This is why we now have two names each year. The Silver Cup has the names engraved and sits proudly in school .
Dux medallist  Rev. Dr. J J Edmiston of Canada.
Jim was dux of Dalmarnock in 1928 and has always treasured his medal. he felt that being awarded the medal inspired his confidence for life and helped him to further achievement. He is now retired from the ministry but is still very active and involved in the Scottish Society in Ontario. He is interested in all that goes on here in Dalmarnock Primary and receives our regular newsletters by post as well as other contact by telephone from Mrs.Winters. Each June he receives a photograph of the dux medal winners and some information about them. Jim hopes ' these medals will change their lives for the better as mine did for me', as he says in his latest letter. The medals are awarded to a boy and girl each year who have outstanding attendance at school , have proved their Academic achievement and who have shown themselves to be good citizens.

"..........I got pipped at the post for the DUX in 1956 by Ian Bannerman he beat me by half a mark. I remember the teachers were all upset as I had been top of the class all through school. I was only upset at the thought of leaving Dalmarnock as I enjoyed it so much there!....."

"..........my Mother, Mrs Christina Forrester (nee Edgar) was once a pupil at your school.  She was also a Dux medallist and only yesterday we passed near the school and we were talking about the beautiful gold medal she has. She was wondering if they still have a Dux of the school, or whether that has died out over time?
My Mum has just celebrated her 80th birthday and is in good health. I believe her brothers and sisters also attended the school - Andrew, May, Nessie, Ina and Sam. They are also still on the go and might all be interested in your celebration.
I personally had intended to write to the school and ask if my Mother could visit with her medal, to have a photograph taken beside her name on the Dux medallist board. It was quite a coincidence seeing the website and reunion details.
My Mother only lives a short distance away, in Burnside."
January 19th. 2004 Chrissie Forrester nee Edgar , dux in 1935/6  visited the school with her daughter.....

"
I had a wonderful visit to the school where Mrs Winters showed me round and I visited my old classroom, which I was last in in 1935. Mrs Winters let the class see my gold dux medal and they wanted to know if she was the headmistress when I was at school! I saw my name on the dux medallist board which was really nice too. Everyone made me so welcome and it made my day. Thank you and good luck to everyone in the future. It's a wonderful school".
18th June 2004.......prizegiving
Chrissie Forrester nee Edgar, was invited along to the annual prizegiving and presented the school dux medals

June 2005, Extract from letter from Ella Grant (nee Park) Largs, Scotland .
Ella Park lived at 48 Ruby Street , attended Dalmarnock Primary School and was Dux of the school in 1940.  Ella was best friends with Chrissie Pritchard and they lost touch for over thirty years but through our website they managed to make contact with each other again in March 2004 and I was delighted to meet them both at the schools open day on Thursday 16th June 2005. Ella had been staying with Chrissie this week and they both attended our schools Civic Reception, held in Glasgow City Chambers.
Wonderful story this and we were delighted that these two ladies aged 76 & 77 were able to come back to the old school, get a guided tour and take a happy walk down memory lane.
See their 1936-37 class photograph.
